About the class

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport and a form of self-defense that focuses on grappling, especially ground fighting.

It was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century,[1][2] which was itself then, a recently-developed system (founded in 1882), based on multiple schools (or Ryu) of Japanese jujutsu.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend himself against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique; most notably, by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.

Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense, Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

About the Instructor

Alexandre “Xandinho” Izidro (6-7-0) is the current Cage Warriors Lightweight World Champion, and has held the Title since October 2005, when he defeated the K-1 Hero’s veteran Jani Lax at CWFC Strike Force 3.

Izidro is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and moved to the UK after growing tired of the Politics in the Brazilian MMA scene.

Once he arrived in the UK he ended-up training and teaching in Milton Keynes alongside other UK fighters such as Danny Batten. “ Xandinho” started his UK MMA career with a victory over Yohan Quoniam at CWFC Ultimate Force in April 2005.

Izidro make an immediate impact as he quickly sunk-in a guillotine choke within a minute of the first round. The Brazilian then fought Dan Hardy at King Of The Cage UK in June 2005, in a bout he took on just 24 hours notice. However Izidro lost via a tight majority decision over 2 closely fought rounds. (A decision that Izidro still argues against to this day)

The BJJ Black Belt then embarked on a daunting fight schedule that saw him faced the Cage Rage Champion Abdul Mohammed twice in a period of six weeks.

These bouts saw Izidro suffer controversial decision loss at Cage Rage 13, as the Brazilian had the best of the action throughout the bout having nearly submitting the powerful wrestler and scoring numerous takedowns too. Izidro then lost to Mohamed the following month at FX3-Battle of Britain when Izidro started brightly but slowed down and in the overtime (Third) round Mohammed was able to do enough to get a decision win.

In-between those two bouts “Xandinho” took on the Scandinavian Jani Lax who has fought previously in Japan at K-1 Hero’s and Shooto. Izidro went into the fight as a huge underdog against Lax, due to the Swedish fighter’s experience and record. However the Braziilian shocked everyone in attendance at the Skydome Arena by submitting Lax with a guillotine choke midway through round 1, to take the win and the Cage Warriors World Title.

The skilful Brazilian was back in action at the now famous Cage Warriors “Night of Champions” event in November 2005, when he defeated the European Vale Tudo GP winner Thomas Hytten in an epic 5 round Title Fight. Izidro was almost KO’ed early in the first round due to the heavy handed strikes of the Norwegian. However Izidro was able to battle on and with his superior stamina was able to pull out a decision win over 5 rounds.

Izidro then went on to win the Title outright by defeating Mario Stapel and Franco de Leonardis by decision in 2006. Although the Stapel bout was seen by many as a frustrating and awkward clash of styles which was only punctuated by the appearance of a streaker towards the latter stages of the fight. However the bout against the German based grappler De Leonardis was a fascinating, tactical battle which saw Izidro take the fight in the later rounds as his stamina, conditioning and determination saw the Champion take a narrow victory at CW Showdown 1 in Sheffield.

However since then, Izidro has had a tough time inside the cage with three straight losses since December 2006. The first of these losses was against Dan Hardy, who he faced a long awaited rematch for the newly formed CWFC Under 73kg World Title at the inaugural Cage Warriors: Enter the Rough House event in Nottingham.

This bout saw the Brazilian stopped for the first time in his career as the bigger, stronger and more aggressive Englishman was victorious after escaping a tight Guillotine in round one, before breaking the Brazilian down with strikes and stopping him with ground and pound with seconds remaining in round 3.

Izidro then took 8 months out before returning against UFC veteran Jason Tan in Liverpool, in another under 73kg bout. Yet again Izidro dropped another razor thin decision against the home fighter. As despite finishing strongly, Izidro was unable to break down his opponent without the aid of the “Championships rounds”. Izidro’s losing streak continued when he dropped another close decision against Paul Reed at Angrrr Management in October 2007.

After his lost to Reed; Izidro decided to move on yet again. So after living, teaching and fighting in the UK for three years, Izidro moved to Hong Kong to help introduce BJJ and MMA to the students of the JAB MMA Academy where he remained inactive in MMA competition.
